VE Day commemorated across the borough

Several events took place across the borough as Blackburn and Darwen commemorated the 70th anniversary of VE Day, the date when victory in Europe was declared following years of conflict during the Second World War

Taking place on Friday, 8 May Outside both Blackburn and Darwen Town Halls, ceremonies took place which included the observing of a two minutes silence at 3pm, which the Blackburn Town Hall ceremony being led by Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Cllr Alan Cottam.

Olympian gives new £13m centre gold seal of approval

Double Olympic Gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE praised the new Blackburn Sports and Leisure Centre during the official opening ceremony today, saying she hoped it inspired future athletes.

‘Just Good Friends’ event brings older people together

There was dancing, good food and good company at an event held for older people

The ‘Just Good Friends’ event held in the Concert Hall in King Georges Hall saw almost 300 people entertained by live music, and also taking part in a free raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

Hundreds gathered as the Borough and Nation commemorates the declaration of War.

A hundred years ago this week Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary in 1914, returned to his chambers in the Foreign Office and lamented “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life”.
