Blackburn town centre is set to host a World Cup family fun day.

Taking place on Saturday, June 14, in front of Blackburn Town Hall from 1-4pm the event promises to build excitement for the tournament and England’s first game in Brazil against Italy later that day.

There will be plenty of fun for all the family on the day with face painting, penalty kick practice and a pair of local football freestylers, Olivia Cooke and Katie Wallbank, who will be putting on a show for the crowds.

The event will also be used as an opportunity to emphasise the importance of being safe and responsible with alcohol consumption during the month-long feast of football. There will also be plenty of giveaways and information.

The multi-agency event has been put together by Blackburn with Darwen Council and partners including Lifeline, Fast 4wd, The Jarman Centre, Blackburn with Darwen Alcohol and Drug Recovery Service, Blackburn with Darwen CCG and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Police and Fire Service will also have a presence in the town centre on the day.

Councillor Brian Taylor, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:

“This promises to be an exciting event. The World Cup is always a wonderful occasion and something to be enjoyed with friends and family. Many people will be drinking alcohol as they enjoy the games or celebrating or commiserating with some drinks after a match. It’s important for people to remember to drink sensibly and look after themselves and friends. Stay safe and enjoy the football.”
