Works to replace Blackburn Market extractor fan underway

Works are underway today to remove and replace Blackburn Market’s extraction fan.

The half-tonne extraction fan will be lifted out via a crane tomorrow ahead of the new unit being installed.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s highway teams have closed a section of Church Street in Blackburn town centre to prepare for the works to take place.

Metal gates have been put up on Church Street to cordon off the area.

The essential replacement and works are costing approximately £30k.

Cllr Phil Riley, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

The original fan has been in situ since the market was first built seven years ago.

It’s been working six-days a week throughout those years and unfortunately has reached the end of its working life, it was assessed to see if it could be repaired but a replacement was deemed the best and most cost effective option.

Fortunately the market’s management had the foresight to order a replacement following previous faults.

There was a 15-week order time for the specialist extractor fan, and fortunately it was delivered in time to get the replacement works addressed without having to compromise the market’s opening.

Cllr Riley added:

In preparation for the crane arriving, the road has been closed. All the traders have been made aware of the essential works and we thank them for their patience whilst these works are being carried out.

We apologise to anybody for any inconvenience caused at this time whilst we carry out these urgent works.

The works are set to be completed by tomorrow evening
