Virtual Science Week with Blackburn Museum

Published Friday 5 March 2021 at 11:28

It’s Virtual Science Week for Blackburn Museum and a chance for children across the borough to learn in classroom settings both at home and at school.

So far, 1800 school children have registered to take part in the virtual lessons, showing fantastic enthusiasm for the subject in the borough.

The sessions based on the Museum collections, which run until Friday 12th March, are all designed to meet aspects of the school curriculum and to get children enthused about science. Lessons include Bridge That Gap – a design and technology lesson – and Mini-Beasts, where children are introduced to the Museums’ collection of over 3000 beetles!

The next generation of scientists will watch and learn via a combination of live and pre-recorded lessons, with plenty of opportunities for practical participation.

This year the response to the virtual sessions has been overwhelming. St Peter’s Primary School in Darwen was the first to book all of its pupils on to the sessions; followed by three Blackburn schools and more schools from across Lancashire.

In all, seven schools have booked over 1800 children to do the sessions, which are being run morning and afternoon, and the museum has had to add extra dates to accommodate all of the children.

Blackburn’s Executive Member for Wellbeing Cllr Damian Talbot said:

“I’m delighted that school children across BwD are still able to enjoy Science Week during the ongoing pandemic. Thanks to the team at Blackburn Museum for working hard to move these sessions, usually held in the Museum, to enable students to learn in virtual classrooms while lockdown restrictions continue. Thanks to the many teachers and families doing their best to educate our young people during this crisis.”
