Here’s our final update following the gas explosion at a property on London Road in Blackburn on Sunday evening.

The evacuated residents from nos. 90 and 92 London Road are being allowed back into their homes today.

This follows the Police completing their forensic investigation at the property where the gas explosion occurred. Their investigation continues off site.

Residents of the properties most affected by the incident continue to be supported by Council teams – that is nos. 88, 86, 84 (the barber’s) and no 68 Inkerman Street, the flat above the barber’s shop.

Council contractors completed the demolition work today, to make the site structurally safe. Scaffolding has been erected at the front on the three properties with sheeting to contain any debris within the site.

The road closure on Inkerman Street has been removed. The cordon around nos. 88, 86 and 84 London Road has now been reduced, however the road closure on this part of London Road will remain for the time being. This will be monitored by Police and Council staff over the festive period.

The man taken to hospital on Sunday evening remains in a stable condition.

Blackburn with Darwen Council Leader, Coun Phil Riley, said:

I know it has been an incredibly difficult and testing week for the residents who had to be evacuated from their properties, and those directly impacted by the incident. I thank them all for their patience while Council teams have been working to make the site safe, while supporting the Police investigation.
