Tony’s Empress Ballroom

Pop legend Human League and Heaven 17 founder Martyn Ware has opened the bolted doors of a former Blackburn ballroom for a unique exhibition.

The ageing dance floor, missing mirror ball and unwashed glasses provided inspiration for the music mogule’s latest exhibition of sound installations.

His specially developed sound piece adds whispers of the soul classics that would have been heard at Tony’s to manipulated sounds recorded during site visits to various Lancashire factories.

The project highlights the ‘work hard, play hard’ cultures of working class towns where industry ruled during the week and dancing at the weekend.

Visitors will be able to come in to Ware’s world and walk back in time filled with sounds from the venues past and echoes of modern forms of labour.

The exhibition will take place at Tony’s Ballroom, Town Hall Street on May 12 & 13 throughout the day.

Spaces are limited so please visit the venue to book a time slot. For more information visit the Festival of Making website.
