Special park run in memory of Manchester attack

People are being urged to gather at Witton Park this Wednesday (May 31) at 7pm for a community 5k run and walk.

The event has been organised by Blackburn Road Runners. It was due to be a celebration run to mark the end of a month long challenge which saw members pledging to run or walk 3 miles a day throughout May.  The club decided to open it up to all walkers and runners following terrorist attack in Manchester to show solidarity.

Hundreds are expected to take part with all sales of yellow ribbons going to the main appeal fund for the victims. Local businesses have also come out in force to offer prizes for a raffle to be held on the evening.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen, Councillor Colin Rigby and Councillor Jean Rigby, will attend and help officially start it.

The chair of Blackburn Road Runners , Susan Wolstenholme, said:

As a club we are so saddened by what happened in Manchester. We would like to show our solidarity with those affected, especially the local family.

We’ve had a fantastic response so far.  Blackburn runners are well known for showing support and unity and it’s great that people of all abilities are pledging to come down and stand side as we find ways to express our sadness. Everybody is welcome.”
