A kind-hearted Darwen couple went the extra mile by donating toys and games for children and parents who use Apple Trees hub in Blackburn.

They joined in the celebrations for International Women’s Day during the visit to the hub, which offers rrspite care for families and children with disabilities and additional needs.

Phil and Karen Boulding, founders of ‘Secret Santa’, said:

Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and businesses, in 2017 we exceeded our target of filling 700 sacks of Christmas presents for local, under privileged children and we felt that we could continue supporting people across Blackburn with Darwen, including those who use Apple Trees Hub.

We were impressed with the enthusiasm of the staff at the centre and their dedication in helping children and young people with disabilities and we are delighted that they and their parents will benefit from Secret Santa.

Anne-Marie Pickering, Disability Links Co-ordinator/Child Support Officer for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

We provide a safe and happy environment for children and young people with significant disabilities and complex needs. We are very proud of our centre and all our staff.

We are over the moon with the generosity of the Secret Santa Appeal and know our children will make sure the toys and games are put to good use.

We were also delighted to welcome the Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen, Cllr Jean Rigby, to our International Women’s Day event and really pleased that Karen Boulding from Secret Santa could join us on our special day.

Phil added:

We have Secret Santa fundraising events planned throughout the year in a bid to make Christmas 2018 memorable for underprivileged people in Blackburn with Darwen.

Councillor Maureen Bateson, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:

This was a truly wonderful thing to do, the children loved all the toys and games. I would like to give a huge thanks to Karen and Phil for their generosity and kindness which makes a big difference wherever they go.
