The Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Councillor Mohammed Khan, has issued the following message for the borough’s Jewish residents ahead of Rosh Hashanah celebrations.
Today at sunset, Jewish residents in the borough will start celebrating Rosh Hashanah.
It’s a very important occasion for those celebrating. But like Eid and Easter earlier this year, and because of COVID, it will be an occasion no-one who is celebrating will have experienced before.
It is a time for families to come together and celebrate God’s creation of the world. It is one of the most significant and important celebrations in the Jewish calendar. Sadly, because of the measures announced today and other measures that have been implemented over the last few weeks, those celebrating will have to do so only with those they live with.
This is an extremely difficult time for us all but I know that by every community working together we can beat this terrible virus and return back to the things we love.
For those celebrating, we want to say Shana Tovah and for you to have a good and sweet year.
Hopefully by next year, things will have got better and all people, those with faith and those with none, can celebrate the important occasions in their lives with no restrictions on meeting, in a COVID free borough.
