Remembrance Services in Blackburn and Darwen

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them’.

Services commemorating Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday will be held across the borough this month, marking a time to remember those in our armed forces who have fallen in past and current wars.

Remembrance Day is always marked as the 11th of November on the calendar as WW1 ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in accordance with the Armistice signed by The Allies and Germany in 1918.

That date will fall on a Friday this year, with Remembrance Sunday being that very weekend. The events on Saturday and Monday forming a ‘Remembrance Long Weekend’ in the borough.

Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Councillor Phil Riley commented:

Remembrance Day is a hugely significant event in our public calendar. It is a time in which the community comes together to pause and pay their respects to our servicemen and servicewomen. Whether this is by taking part in or attending our Remembrance Services or simply reflecting in smaller activities at home, it is an occasion marked with grace by the people of our borough.
