Record Turnout in Blackburn with Darwen Youth Elections 2026

Nearly 8,000 young people have cast their votes in the Blackburn with Darwen Youth Elections 2026, marking a significant milestone for youth voice and democratic engagement across the borough. 

Voting took place across secondary schools and partner youth organisations, demonstrating the continued strength of youth participation and civic education locally. 

This year’s election saw an increase of 2,000 votes compared to 2024, reflecting growing engagement and a clear message that young people in the borough are supported to have their voices heard and acted upon.

Councillor Julie Gunn, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said:

“I’m very proud of all our young people that took part in the youth MP elections. The record-breaking turnout demonstrates that young people in Blackburn with Darwen are engaged, informed and passionate about shaping the future of their communities.

In Blackburn with Darwen we have a long-standing tradition of making sure our young people have an impactful voice. It’s very important that young people are engaged and included in our democracy and respect the democratic process.

Congratulations to Oliver, Ali and Arianna.”

The newly elected Youth Member of Parliament Oliver Woods is a student at St Bede’s High School. Oliver’s campaign focused on, reducing youth crime, improving regeneration across the borough and enhancing local transport for young people.

Oliver said:

“Blackburn with Darwen has chosen real change.  Immortalised by our motto “Arte et Labore” , know progress comes through skill and hard work. 

Working with my deputies I will change our borough to what I feel it deserves.”

Elected as First Deputy Youth MP is Ali Shah from Witton Park High School. Ali’s campaign priorities include, tackling bullying, and improving career guidance and pathways for young people.  Ali has pledged to champion inclusive school environments and ensure young people are better informed about their future education, employment and training options.

Ali said:

“As deputy youth MP for Blackburn, I believe it’s an honour to fill a position where the young people can make a stand for real change.”

The Second Deputy Youth MP is Arianna Sultana, who is home educated. Arianna campaigned on, tackling youth crime and improving education standards and accessibility

Her election highlights the inclusive nature of the borough’s democratic process, ensuring that young people from all educational backgrounds are represented.

Arianna said:

“I am incredibly honoured to have been elected as Second Deputy Youth MP,  I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported me and believed in my vision.”

The Youth MP team will now work alongside local partners and decision-makers to ensure that the priorities identified during the campaign period translate into real action and improved outcomes for children and young people across the borough.
