One of the most celebrated ukiyo-e wood block print series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, created by renowned Japanese printmaker, Utagawa Hiroshige, is now on display at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery.

This is a rare opportunity to see all 55 prints on display together and to enjoy the wonders of Japan’s historic coastal highway. Visitors can walk around the gallery and travel with Hiroshige as he expertly captures the natural beauty of Japan.  Take time to admire the fascinating views, varying seasons and humorous events captured by him.

Anthea Purkis, Curator of Art at Blackburn Museum, said:

We are very fortunate to have this full set of the 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road series in our Japanese wood block print collection.  I hope that people can take this rare opportunity see them in all of their beauty and enjoy the tantalising glimpses into everyday life in Hiroshige’s Japan.

It’s great to see our museums opening up to our residents again. This new exhibition is full of history and culture and it’s just one of many ways our community can come together and share in this one of kind experience.

The exhibition runs until 18th September 2021.

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery is open 12.00-4.45 Wednesday-Saturday.
