Over 50s Group call out for fresh faces

An over 50s group in Blackburn with Darwen is on the lookout for new members.

The group, based at Greenfields Community Centre on Green Lane, Blackburn has been running for 17 years and offers a place for people aged 50 and above to meet new people and take part in various activities, including the occasional day trip.

Members meet every Wednesday and Friday at 1pm to chat and have a go at activities including pool, dominos, and curling for just £1 per session. They are open to developing new activities with new members, as long as the Community Centre can facilitate them.

Councillor Brian Taylor, Assistant Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing and vice-chair of the Darwen Primary Care Neighbourhood, said:

The Over 50s group offers people a chance to regularly meet up with others of a similar age. Groups like this play an essential part in tackling social isolation and improving mental wellbeing in the community. I hope that they get the numbers they need to keep the group running.

Councillor Mustafa Desai, Executive Member for Adult Services & Prevention, said:

The Council is committed to working with local organisations who work hard to keep Community Centres open for groups like this. The volunteers here show fantastic community spirit and it is a fine example of the Your Call initiative.

Eric, a current member of the group, said:

I enjoy coming here for the company. We do lots of different activities and we often have days out. We used to have a dance class, but we didn’t have enough members to make it worthwhile. We still have all the equipment, so if we can get some more people to join us we may even start dancing again.
