Local pilot project Positive Minds, part of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s Adult Learning Service is to continue to run a range of courses aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing over the next twelve months, following a successful first year.

The project, which around 400 learners have taken part in so far, is being funded by Central Government Departments who are carrying out research into the benefits of courses for those experiencing anxiety, depression and stress.

Courses to date have included “Getting started with Digital Photography”, “Cook, eat and unwind” and “Living Life to The Full” as well as many other subjects.

It aims to give learners the opportunity to learn something new, make new friends and develop strategies to improve their health and wellbeing.

Members of the groups have reported feeling less depressed, more relaxed and able to enjoy new things as they completed the sessions.

Kim Kenyon, who has completed one of the “Cook, eat and unwind” courses at Bank Top Neighbourhood Learning Centre, said: “It has helped me massively with my confidence and self-esteem, and made me more positive in my outlook on life.

“I would tell people to try these courses – you will love them, find something you want to do and it will build your confidence as it has for me.”

Since completing the project, several group members have worked with Denise Cottam, one of the Community Wellbeing Co-ordinators, to form their own group, Happy Snappers.

They are now meeting once a fortnight to continue their interest in digital photography, plan location visits and support each other.

Councillor Brian Taylor, Mental Health Champion and Assistant Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care:

We realise what an important part social inclusion and social prescribing can play in improving mental health and wellbeing.  The Positive Minds courses will give the opportunity to learn new skills, engage with people and the natural environment that are all proven to be positive influences for people experiencing anxiety or depression.
