New ‘cleaner’ Blackburn buses announced on Clean Air Day

Blackburn with Darwen Council has welcomed news that the Blackburn Bus Company has chosen Clean Air Day (June 20) to announce it will be bringing even cleaner buses to the area.

The 12 brand new British-built buses are on order and are due to arrive later in the year.

The single-deck buses are being built in Scarborough and are the cleanest diesel buses around at Euro 6 rating – meaning each bus gives out less pollution than a single car.

The move is part of a £3.5m investment programme and the buses will run on the number one service which links Blackburn, Darwen and Bolton.

Councillor Jim Smith, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said:

Clean Air Day is a perfect day to make this announcement. I’m delighted we’ll have a new fleet of buses on the road serving the people of Blackburn with Darwen and that these buses will greatly contribute to our focus on making the air cleaner and healthier for everyone.

General Manager of The Blackburn Bus Company, Shaun Walmsley, said:

We’re delighted to have put in an order for brand new buses for Blackburn. Each one of our buses can take up to 50 cars off the road, so these cleaner buses make even more of a difference than ones we’ve used before.

Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign and, in Blackburn with Darwen, several events are taking place to mark the event.
