Michael Portillo takes his Great British Railway Journey to Blackburn

Blackburn’s Heritage will be displayed on BBC Two this evening as Michael Portillo takes his Great British Railway Journey to the town.

In this new series Michael will be travelling by rail around the British Isles and exploring post-war history and events that have shaped these very distinctive regions between 1945-1979.

The episode in the first in a new series where Michael catches the train from Preston to Rawtenstall.

The politician-turned TV presenter visited Blackburn to discuss the town’s political heritage, with a focus on former women’s rights campaigner MP Barbara Castle and her dedication to implementing change.

He visits The Baroness bronze statue in Jubilee Square, Blackburn to reflect on the word she did whilst being MP for Blackburn.

She was instrumental in the Equal Pay Act and championing women’s rights, Barbara also introduced the Carer’s Allowance, as well as road safety legislation that led to the introduction of seatbelts and breathalyser tests.

The Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Cllr Phil Riley, said: “It’s always excellent to see Blackburn being showcased on national television and it’s also great to see Barbara Castle’s legacy being shared with the nation.

“The plan to educate people about Barbara Castle was one of the main reasons of having the bronze statue in Jubilee Square. Hopefully the programme will inspire others to find out more about the formidable character that she was.”

Michael also visits East Lancashire Heritage Railway in Bury to see how the Beeching cuts affected rail services in Great Britain and can be seen on BBC Two at 6.30pm tonight (MONDAY) and on iPlayer shortly after broadcast.
