The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Coun Parwaiz Akhtar, has recorded a video message to share Easter greetings with everyone who’ll be celebrating this weekend.

Easter is one of the most important festivals in the Christian calendar. It marks the end of Lent, a time of sacrifice and repentance, and represents rebirth and new beginnings as Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Mayor Coun Akhtar said:

As last year, Easter falls during Ramadan. There are strong similarities between Ramadan and Lent, as periods of sacrifice and abstinence, as well as fasting and religious reflection.

As a Muslim, I’ve appreciated seeing non-Muslims in our communities taking part in Ramadan activities, and likewise seeing non-Christian residents joining in Easter festivities and celebrations.

And there are lots more activities taking place over the Easter weekend for our diverse communities to enjoy together.

However you are planning to spend Easter, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Happy Easter.”

Over the Easter weekend, Blackburn town centre is hosting the Easter Escapade, a family friendly trail in the style of an escape room, put together by Lucardo Escape Rooms and Blackburn BID. Between Thursday 28 March and Saturday 13 April, there are 10 Easter themed puzzles located around the town centre for families and teams of all ages to find and solve.

Libraries in Blackburn and Darwen will be hosting Easter themed stories and craft sessions for families to attend on Saturday 30 March. Blackburn Museum is also offering free workshops over the two-week Easter holidays, including henna painting and painting workshops.

Plus, Darwen Artisan Market is taking place on Saturday 30 March, and inside the Market Hall there are also free pop-up stalls offering activities including postcard printing.
