The Council Leader and Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen will be supporting Lancashire Mind’s Summer Solstice Walking Challenge this coming Monday 22 June.
Taking place at Witton Park Athletics Arena, the challenge brings people together to walk from sunrise (around 4:35am) to sunset (around 9:45pm), raising vital funds and awareness for important mental health support in Blackburn and across Lancashire.
Although registrations for the full challenge have now closed, everyone is invited to take part in this community event. However long you can join for or distance you choose to walk, the additional support will help create and build on the community atmosphere and provide encouragement to those walking for the full 17+ hours!
Funds raised from the challenge will support Lancashire Mind and nine other local charities including the Mayor’s chosen charity Nightsafe. The Mayor will also be there on the day to show support to his charity and the event with the Deputy Mayor planning to take part in some of the walking.
Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Councillor Phil Riley said;
This is a fantastic event raising awareness and money for important causes alongside the physical and mental health benefits for those taking part.
I am proud to support this event taking place in Blackburn’s Witton Park which encourages movement, connection and community spirit. I send well wishes to all those taking on their own personal challenges as part of this event.
Andrea Pollard, Fundraising Lead at Lancashire Mind said;
This is a truly special event and are pleased to be raising funds for nine very important charities. Working together in this way will give us a stronger voice to continue to support the communities we serve. We can’t wait for Monday and are keeping everything crossed for fair weather.
People are encouraged to drop in at any time throughout the day, walk alongside participants taking on the 17+ hour challenge, turn it into a catch-up with colleagues, friends or family or simply take the opportunity to get your daily 10,000 steps in a different environment.
