Lots of choice in new adult learning programme

From reiki, Japanese yoga and meditation to first aid and food hygiene – there’s something for everyone in the council’s latest adult learning programme.

People can choose from more than 50 courses which aim to help them improve their work prospects and wellbeing – and have fun.

Almost all are free, with just a nominal charge for some.

New courses include a topical workshop on how to make your home greener, an introduction to natural plant therapies and a course to help over 50s build their employability skills.

More sessions to help people with dementia and their families to live well with the condition have also been introduced. These include creative arts sessions to help people to recall memories and a guided memory walk in Blackburn town centre.

Courses take place at Audley and Queen’s Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Bank Top Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Blackburn Town Hall and Darwen Town Hall.

Sayyed Osman, director of Adult Services and Prevention at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

With so much on offer, there is hopefully something for everyone whether they want to improve their job prospects or health and wellbeing, learn a new skill or simply have fun and meet new people.

I am particularly pleased that the courses we have developed in association with the Blackburn with Darwen Dementia Action Alliance are proving popular.

Dementia affects not only the lives of people who are diagnosed, but their families too. The courses will help people to develop an understanding of the condition, allow them to forget about their day-to-day stresses for an hour or two and improve their quality of life.
