Blackburn with Darwen Council is once again supporting local charity One Voice Blackburn in their search for local heroes.
The nomination process has opened for the 1V Awards 2023, and will be the tenth installment in what has now become one of the community’s most prestigious accolades.
Zaffer Khan, Chief Executive of One Voice Blackburn, said:
“There is so much talent and achievements in Blackburn with Darwen worth celebrating, and this is the ideal gathering to showcase all that is good about our town. There is a certain amount of expectation and anticipation at our events and as a result, we challenge ourselves to produce something unique. This year we are thrilled to have increased the number of awards”
The 1V Awards 2023 include:
- The Aya Hachem Young Person of the Year award
- 1V Man of the Year
- 1V Woman of the Year
- 1V Group of the Year
- 1V Health Lead Award
- John Roberts Outstanding Achievement Award
The criteria for all of these awards find their roots in those who have made a real difference in the community and shown a real passion to make a positive impact on those around them. With the focus being on the success of local volunteers, community groups, charities, and local people. To read about the award categories in more detail, you can do so here.
If you’d like to make a nomination you can do so via One Voice Website. A required of up to 200 words stating why the person or group you are nominating is worthy of the award is needed, with there being an option to upload supporting information as well.
The closing date for nominations is Friday 18 November.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Phil Riley along with the trustees of One Voice Blackburn, will be choosing the winner of the Leaders 1V Award. This category recognises an individual who makes a significant contribution to local life with a strong ethos of integration and cohesion. Previous winners include Blackburn Muslim Burial Society, recognised for their tireless work supporting bereaved families during the pandemic.
Cllr Phil Riley, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

“It’s so powerful and fills you with pride as you see people coming together and celebrating the best of Blackburn. It’s great to hear so many stories about the impact people are having, giving of themselves for the greater good.
“One Voice is a really forward-thinking organisation. They are a force of good who share the values of the Council so we are proud to partner with them on many different.”
The headline sponsors for the event are Blackburn based charities –Together Housing and Newground Together.
Other local organisations sponsoring IV awards include – Reel Cinemas, Blackburn Youth Zone and Blackburn College.
