The winners of the Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s Coronation-themed If I Were King/Queen competition have been announced.

Ten-year-old Emily Lowe of St Peter’s RC Primary School in Blackburn and nine-year-old Harriett Moss, of Ashleigh Primary School in Darwen were welcomed by The Mayor in his parlour at the Old Town Hall to collect their certificates for their winning answers.

Emily’s winning words were: “If I were Queen I’d lower prices down and I would stop water bills. I would make sure that everyone feels safe and not stressed out. I would make sure people get enough money.”

And if Harriett was a Queen for the day: “If I were Queen I’d clean up the environment to make the air that we breathe cleaner. I would make more parks and outdoor spaces to get children out playing again. I would plant trees and wild flowers and stop racism.”

Schools across Blackburn with Darwen were encouraged to enter the competition in the run up to King Charles Coronation so that young people could tell us what they would do if they were ever made King or Queen.

The submissions were hard to judge but were narrowed down to two winners by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s Strategic Director of Children’s Services and Education, Joanne Siddle.

Joanne said:

It was fabulous to hear our young people talk about their hopes and dreams for the future and the thing that shone through was the care for our community and our environment. Our young people really can show us the way forward.

The Mayor, Cllr Suleman Khonat, also said he was pleased with the winning entries.

He said:

It was wonderful to welcome the children into the parlour and hear about how they would spend their day as a Queen. Their attitude to making a difference is wonderful and their kindness will really make a difference. Well done to them both.
