Get on your bike for the school run in Blackburn with Darwen

How do you do the school run? It’s Bike to School Week, a chance to try the school run on two wheels and discover the benefits to you and your children.

Active children do better at school, and by introducing the bicycle to more short journeys by bike can reduce the amount of cars on the road at peak times, making it safer for everyone. Congestion causes problems for local air quality, and research shows children in our communities need to be more active to help them avoid long term health issues.

Councillor Zainab Rawat has recently taken up cycling around the borough:

It’s been a revelation.

It’s so much quicker for those short journeys. Every family should try it.

Affordable bikes can be sourced at a number of second hand shops in the area but Cycle Roots CIC also offers families repair and maintenance workshops, as well as daily bike hire available from Witton Park Cycle Centre.

Young mum, Sam Riddehough, recently got on her bike when her daughter became a keen cyclist during lockdown:

The most surprising thing of all is, it’s now me, the reluctant cyclist, pestering the
family to get on our bikes when we haven’t been out for a couple of days. I’ve gotten hooked on enjoying the fresh air and the family time out and about, of being active together.

If you’ve not been on a bike in a while, or even if you’ve never been on a bike before, you can also book in for a free session with the re:fresh team at Witton Park.

It’s never too late to get on your bike for the school run.
