Funding opportunities greater than £100,000

Emergency Funding for Homeless Organisations

Local homelessness organisations that require emergency financial assistance can apply for grants of up to £100,000 to the COVID-19 Homelessness Response Fund.  A total funding pot of £5.5 million is available.

The funding aims to provide emergency financial assistance to local homelessness organisations, preventing closure, service cuts or staff redundancies threatened by increased operational costs and a loss of fundraised income due to the Coronavirus. It will also support organisations that have needed to expand or adapt their services in light of COVID-19 to support people experiencing homelessness safely and effectively.

The funding is available to organisations with a turnover of less than £5 million per year,

There are two funding streams available

£4.82 million is provided by The National Lottery Community Fund for homelessness charities in England.

A further £680,000 is from Comic Relief, which raises money to support people living incredibly tough lives, and will primarily be allocated to charities based in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The deadline to apply to the Comic Relief funding stream is the 3rd August 2020, with decisions made during August.  There are two deadlines for the National Lottery Community Fund funding stream.  The 3rd August 2020 for decisions in early September and the 14th September 2020 for decisions made in mid-October.

Funding to Support Textile Recycling and Re-Use

Grants of between £20,000 and £170,000 are now available to commercial and not-for-profit organisations of any size to support clothing or linen waste textile recycling and re-use.  The aim is to keep waste textiles out of landfill so that it remains a valuable resource.

WRAP is offering a total of £1.5 million in grants for projects that use innovative ideas, technologies and equipment, and that fit a range of criteria, including demonstrating “innovation beyond normal practice”. Projects also require match funding: 10% from not-for-profit and 50% from commercial organisations.

Funding is intended for capital expenditure only; either for equipment or technologies (excluding software apps) that enable recycling or re-use. Financing comes from Defra’s £18m Resource Action Fund, which supports resource efficiency projects across the board.

£45 Million of National Lottery COVID Funding to Support Vulnerable Communities

The National Lottery Community Fund has opened a £45 million programme to fund charities community groups and social enterprises across England working with people disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus.

The fund will be distributed through five partnerships:

  • Covid-19 Homelessness Response Fund – The funding will provide financial relief to small and medium sized homelessness charities to adapt their service delivery to respond to the crisis and what they have learnt over the last few months about how to deliver services to people experiencing homelessness during a pandemic. A total of £5 million is available.
  • COVID-19 Community Led Organisations Recovery Scheme – Power to Change, Locality, The Ubele Initiative and Social Investment Business are delivering this scheme to support community-led organisations in England. Particularly interested in funding BAME-led or BAME-supporting organisations. A total of £10 million is available.
  • Community Justice Fund – The funding will support specialist social welfare advice organisations, providing flexible support so that organisations can respond to the challenges in ways that best meet their beneficiaries’ needs but for which they do not currently have the funds. A total of £5 million is available.
  • The COVID-19 Social Enterprise Support Fund Partnership – This funding will provide grants to social enterprise organisations that are best placed to support local, vulnerable communities in response to the Covid-19 crisis. A total of £19.7 million is available.
  • Barrow Cadbury Trust Covid-19 Support Fund – This funding will specifically target small and medium sized voluntary sector groups supporting migrants and refugees. A total of £5.15 million is available.

The partnerships will focus on supporting organisations that work with those communities that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. This includes BAME and other communities experiencing health inequalities and people experiencing homelessness. There will also be a focus on getting support to social enterprises.

Funding to Improve the Quality of PE and Sport Provision in Primary Schools

The Education Secretary has announced that schools in England will benefit from £320 million from the PE and Sport Premium during the academic year 2020-21.

Allocations to primary schools will be determined by a formula based on pupil numbers. An average one form entry primary school will receive roughly £18,000 per year to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity so that pupils experience the benefits of regular exercise – from becoming healthier both mentally and physically to improved behaviour and better academic achievement.

The programme builds on the School Sport and Activity Action Plan launched in 2019 and underlines the importance of PE and sport in the Government’s manifesto.

Funding to Help Understand the Impact of Covid-19 on the Health and Social Care System

Funding of between £100,000 and £200,000 is available for projects of up to twelve months which seek to understand the impact of Covid-19 on the health and social care system in the UK, and to use this research to inform policy and/or service delivery decisions for the future.

The Health Foundation’s new Covid-19 Research Programme is open to suitable qualified and experienced research teams to help understand the impact of the crisis in two areas:

  • how service delivery has changed,
  • the impact of the virus on health inequalities and the wider effects of health.

Applications for projects from multidisciplinary teams combining expertise from a broad range of disciplines, involving patients, the public and people with lived experience are welcome.

£266 million Housing Fund for Rough Sleepers and Vulnerable People Affected by the Covid-19 Crisis

The UK Government has announced a £266 million housing fund for rough sleepers and vulnerable people. The Next Steps Accommodation Programme makes funding available to councils and their local partners to help break the cycle of homelessness by ensuring as few people as possible helped off the streets and into emergency accommodation during the Covid-19 pandemic return to sleeping rough.

£105 million has been allocated to cover property costs and support new tenancies to ensure they continue to have a safe place to stay. £161 million has been allocated to help people into long term accommodation by delivering 3,300 units of longer-term, move-on accommodation.

The deadline for submitting bids is 11:59pm on the 20th August.

Inspiring Futures Programme Launched

BBC Children in Need and Youth Futures Foundation have partnered to launch the new £6 million Inspiring Futures programme. This new programme will support organisations working to improve employment prospects for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

The programme is open to all charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations across the UK that are working with disadvantaged children and young people. Organisations working with children from ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

The Inspiring Futures programme will support children and young people between the ages 10 – 24 (10 to 18 In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) and the grants will run for a duration of up to 18 months, with awards being made of between £10,000 and £80,000.

The programme will fund a variety of projects that help children and young people to build the confidence and skills they need as they develop, supporting them to secure employment and fulfil their career aspirations. Organisations could deliver activities such as:

  • youth support work and music, arts and sports activities that enables development of work readiness skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving;
  • support for further education, training or employment that they may not normally have accessed;
  • support through the provisions of volunteering and work experience; support from a trusted, consistent adviser to help young people achieve goals and overcome barriers;
  • support with mental and physical health problems and housing issues, that may be barriers to employment.

The closing date for applications is 11:30am on the 31st July 2020. Decisions are expected mid-October 2020.

Grants to Support Children’s Health and Education

The next deadline to apply to the DM Thomas Foundation Central Grants Programme has been extended to the 6th October 2020. The Foundation distributes a total of around £200,000 per quarter.

Grants of up to £30,000 are available per year for up to two years to registered charities for projects that improve education and health for young people in three key areas:

  • Children and young people with disabilities
  • Children and young people who are sick in hospital
  • Children and young people who are life limited (requiring palliative care)

The Foundation is a small charity and generally will not make awards of over £30,000 (per year). Funding can be requested for one-off projects or for up to 2 years work.

Applications from schools and hospitals are welcomed as long as they are made through an appropriate registered charity.

If favoured, grant applications for up to £5,000 can be approved by the Director, up to £10,000 can be approved by the Grants Committee, and applications for more than £10,000 are recommended to the Trustees for final approval.

Funding to Help BAME-Led Organisations Access Coronavirus Funds

In response to the coronavirus, the UK Community Foundations is making a £250,000 Infrastructure Fund available for BAME-led infrastructure organisations that can help other BAME-led organisations apply for National Emergency Trust (NET) grants though their local Community Foundations.

Grants of between £50,000 and £20,000 are available to fund work such as for example:

  • Awareness-raising via marketing and communications
  • Mentoring/supporting of groups through the local Community Foundation application process
  • Support with monitoring and reporting
  • Provision of micro grants to enable applications for NET funding through community foundations
  • Building relationships to help community foundations identify and address barriers to funding BAME-led organisations and communities

Applications can be made on a rolling basis and will be considered by an independent panel every week with awards made as quickly as possible thereafter.

Community Justice Fund Opens for Applications

Specialist social welfare legal advice organisations can apply for grants of between £25,000 – £75,000 through the new Community Justice Fund.  The Community Justice Fund is a joint initiative to help specialist social welfare legal advice organisations cope with the immediate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lay the foundations for longer-term renewal.

To be eligible for funding:

  • An organisation must be registered with the Charity Commission and working in the UK;
  • Able to demonstrate a track record of delivering specialist legal advice in one or more of the following areas of law: asylum, community care, debt, disability, discrimination, education, employment, housing, immigration, mental health, public and administrative law and welfare benefits.
  • able to demonstrate a track record in delivering advice at specialist level including carrying out end-to-end casework for clients, carrying out representation in a court or tribunal and/or holding legal aid contracts

The fund is not able to support generalist advice agencies, private sector legal aid practices or individuals.

Grants will be awarded in two waves.

Wave one is open now. Applications will be considered on a weekly basis while funds are available. Decisions will be received within ten days of submitting an application.

Wave two will, subject to fundraising, open in autumn this year and provide flexible grants responding to ongoing needs and building on the promising work arising out of wave one.

Funding for Projects which reduce the Use of Single Use Primary Plastic Packaging

The Waste and Resources Action Programme working in partnership with UK Research and Innovation, are inviting applications for round 2 of their £475,000 Refill Infrastructure Grant scheme.

Funding of between £50,000 and £150,000 for project proposals that have strong commercial potential to reduce the use of single use primary plastic packaging within an existing or new supply chain. Grants are available for both capital and revenue expenditure for inventive proposals that will change the way retailers and their suppliers operate, so that their customers have new options to buy products in refillable containers.

The scheme is looking to support collaborative projects between retailers, manufacturers, and/or supply chain partners. Grant recipients are expected to contribute a minimum of 25% match-funding.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 13:00 on the 6th August.

Grants for Urgent Structural Repairs to Churches

National Churches Trust has changed its grant programmes in line with the new Building Resilience Strategy for 2019-2023 and now offers three grant streams.

The Cornerstone Grant Programme supports the conservation and sustainable use of church buildings, focusing on larger and more complex projects.

Grants are offered towards the cost of urgent structural repair projects costed at more than £100,000 including VAT. The Trust will also consider projects that introduce kitchens and accessible toilets to enable increased community use, costed at more than £30,000 including VAT.

Grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 are awarded to represent a maximum of 50% of the project cost.

Applications are accepted from listed and unlisted Christian places of worship, of any denomination, across the UK. The Trust particularly encourages applications from priority areas i.e. North East England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The next deadline to apply for a Cornerstone Grant is 2nd November 2020.

Funding to Support Music Careers of People aged 18-25

Grants of between £5,000 and £30,000 are available to businesses, collectives, and not-for-profit organisations working in the music industries to invest in the careers of young people aged 18-25, particularly those from under-represented groups.

Youth Music’s £2 million Incubator Fund, backed by the People’s Postcode Lottery, aims to promote diversity and inclusion within the music industry by supporting programmes that help open up access to sustainable careers in music, and support creative employers to innovate and incubate new and diverse talent.

At least 50% of the funding should go directly to the 18-25s, with the remainder paying for organisational and delivery costs. Sole traders can also apply for funding of up to £15,000.

Covid-19 Community-Led Organisations Recovery Scheme

Covid-19 Community-Led Organisations Recovery Scheme offers grants up to £100,000 to community organisations in England who are facing financial difficulties caused by Covid-19. The scheme is aimed at organisations delivering services in their local community to support people who are at high risk from Covid-19, with an emphasis on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME)-led or BAME-supporting businesses.

The funding is available to

  • help people and communities experiencing disproportionate challenge and difficulty as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
  • provide services and support for vulnerable people, for which there will be increased demand as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

The £9.5 million Covid-19 Community-Led Organisations Recovery Scheme is being delivered by Power to Change, Locality, The Ubele Initiative and Social Investment Business on behalf of the National Lottery Community Fund.

The recovery scheme will open on Tuesday 28 July for applications from 10am till 1pm. And then for a further two rounds on Tuesday 4 August from 10am till 1pm and Tuesday 11 August from 10am till 1pm.

The Rank Foundation – Pebble Grants Programme

UK registered charities and recognised churches which are raising money for capital projects (building work, refurbishment or the purchase of long-term equipment) or a one-off short term activity (such as an annual respite break or holiday for disadvantaged young people) can apply for funding through the Rank Foundation – Pebble Small Grants programme.

To be eligible to apply the total project cost must be less than £150,000, the organisation must have an annual income of less than £500,000 and the organisation applying must already have raised a third of the total costs.

Please note that the Foundation do not publish deadlines or maximum amounts as this is dependent on the number of applications received.

Organisations can only apply once every 12 months regardless of the outcome of their application.

Applications can be submitted at any time and the Foundation is currently accepting applications for the November 2020 meeting of Trustees. Any applications received after early October 2020 will be seen in the January 2021 meeting.

Funding opportunities under £25,000

Royal Society of Chemistry – Outreach Fund Small Grants Scheme

Individuals and organisations such as researchers, museums, schools, community groups, not-for-profit organisations, arts groups and libraries can apply for grants of up to £10,000 to run chemistry-based events and activities for public audiences and in schools.

Applications for school’s engagement activities should demonstrate how the proposed activities will:

  • enrich student’s chemistry education and not solely deliver the curriculum
  • provide students with opportunities to explore chemistry through local contexts, AND/OR
  • demonstrate career opportunities and develop employability skills, AND/OR
  • provide opportunities which would not normally be accessible to the students taking part, e.g. for hard-to-reach student audiences.

Applications for public engagement activities should demonstrate how the proposed activities will:

  • increase chemists’ visibility as approachable people AND/OR
  • increase the publics’ confidence in discussing chemistry AND/OR
  • demonstrate the relevance of chemistry to everyday interests and concerns.

The Outreach Fund is split into two categories: small grants – up to £5,000 and large grants – up to £10,000.

Previously funded projects include “Cool chemistry at the seaside” where the Society awarded a grant of £2,000 to volunteers in Ramsgate who transformed an empty town-centre shop into a makeshift theatre, delivering free chemistry demonstrations to anyone.

The closing date for applications to the small grants programme is the 10th August 2020.  The closing date for the large grants programme is the 14th September 2020.

Science and Chemistry Equipment Grants for Schools

Teachers at primary or secondary schools can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 towards the purchase of equipment to support the delivery of Primary Science or Chemistry lessons. Bids are invited for the purchase of items of equipment that cannot be purchased through a school’s mainstream teaching budget and which would enrich the learning experience of students.

The Royal Society of Chemistry aims to support schools in presenting Chemistry lessons that enrich the learning experience of students in either primary (science) or secondary (chemistry) studies.  The Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector (BMCS) of the Society awards Enhanced Equipment grants towards the purchase of equipment that supports delivery of the practical aspect of chemistry education. Applications will be enhanced by a demonstration of the diversity of application of the equipment within and between student cohorts.

A teacher at a primary or secondary school should make the application.

The funding is being made available through the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Enhanced Equipment grant scheme and the next deadline for applications is 15th August 2020.

Funding for Chemistry Clubs at Schools and Colleges

Schools and colleges can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to run chemistry activities. The funds which are made available by the Royal Society of Chemistry, are targeted at activities run at schools and colleges outside the normal science timetable. Activities should be focused on generating interest in chemistry in all ability levels or which may provide opportunities to stretch and challenge the already able and motivated students.

Applications from existing chemistry clubs looking to expand/ enhance activities would be welcome as would those from schools and colleges interested in starting a new club. An application would need to indicate how the longevity of the proposal was ensured and how best practice and experience from it might be shared within and between other (perhaps feeder) schools. The application must be made by a teacher at a primary or secondary school.

British Ecological Society – Outreach Grants

The British Ecological Society has announced that its Outreach Grants programme is now open for applications. Through the programme, individuals and organisations such as schools, museums, libraries and community groups will be able to apply for grants to promote ecological science to a wide audience.

The funding is available for projects that increase public understanding of, and engagement with ecology by:

  • Increasing public understanding of, and engagement with, ecology
  • Stimulating discussion about ecology and its implications for society
  • Inspiring and enthusing people of all ages about the science of ecology, especially those not previously interested
  • Developing skills in communicating the science of ecology

Applications from museums and schools are welcome but projects must involve significant outreach beyond schools as those aimed solely at delivering curriculum to school children will not be considered. Grants are not be awarded for purely nature conservation purposes or any activity that does not promote the science of ecology.

Projects supported will:

  • Be aimed at a non-academic audience
  • Provide a clear demonstration of direct interaction with the audience
  • Show evidence of links to the research community at UK, regional and international levels, where appropriate

The maximum award is £2,000 which may form all or part of the total costs of the project. Larger projects involving other sponsors are also funded.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on the 7th September 2020.

Nominations for the 2020 National Lottery Awards Are Now Open

Nominations for the 2020 National Lottery Awards are now open to honour individuals who have made an extraordinary impact in their community, especially those who have adapted during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

This year the annual search for the UK’s most popular National Lottery funded projects will, for the first time, honour individuals who will receive £3,000 for their organisation as well as a National Lottery Awards trophy for outstanding contributions in any of the following categories:

  • arts;
  • charity/voluntary;
  • education;
  • environment;
  • health;
  • heritage;
  • sport;
  • young hero (under 18s).

Nominations for ‘hometown heroes’ or ‘lockdown legends’ will be put before a judging panel made up of members of The National Lottery family and partners.

The deadline for nominations is midnight on the 19th August 2020.

Screwfix Foundation Re-Opens for Applications

The Screwfix Foundation has re-opened for applications from charities and not for profit organisations for projects that will fix, repair, maintain and improve the properties and community facilities of those in need by reason of financial hardship, sickness, disability, distress or other disadvantage throughout the UK.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for all kinds of projects, from repairing buildings and improving facilities in deprived areas, to decorating the homes of people living with sickness and disabilities.

Applications can be made at any time and will be reviewed on a quarterly basis.

Funding to Support Migrants and Refugees Affected by the Pandemic

Barrow Cadbury Trust is partnering with the National Lottery Communities Fund (NLCF) to distribute COVID-19 emergency response funding to the migration charity sector in England. The Trust has £5 million to distribute for work that will relieve hardship caused by the pandemic among refugees and asylum-seekers and by migrants experiencing barriers to accessing services.

The funding is available to charities or not for profit organisations registered in England with an income of between £10,000 and £1 million whose main focus is on providing support to refugees, asylum seekers or migrants,, you can apply to us for a grant. The maximum that can be applied for is £50,000 or three months’ expenditure, whichever is the smaller.

The application deadline is Sunday 2nd August 2020.  Decisions will be made by mid-October and grants must be spent within six months.

Funding for the Redistribution of Surplus Food

The UK Government in collaboration with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has announced that the deadline for applications to phase 2 of the Emergency Surplus Food Grant is 1pm on the 28th August 2020.

The aim of the £1 million grant scheme is to provide support to small and micro-sized not-for-profit food redistributors who can redistribute surplus food from retailers, wholesalers and food manufacturers to vulnerable people and those in need who are affected by the coronavirus.

The funding is available for:

  • Storage and containers, shelving and racking
  • Temporary rental/ hire of equipment or vehicles
  • Purchase of vehicles or loading equipment
  • Logistical and distribution costs- such as the use of a third-party delivery firm
  • New PPE and hygiene equipment
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Labelling equipment
  • Stock inventory equipment
  • Volunteer expenses
  • Communication equipment
  • New staff costs

Grants of between £5,000 and £10,000 are available.

Funding for High Quality New Music Projects

PRS Foundation’s Open Fund for Organisations supports high quality new music projects led by promoters, talent development organisations, venues, festivals, curators and large performance groups (for example orchestras, choirs, jazz bands or folk groups with 12 or more performers).

Supported projects will involve the creation, performance and promotion of new music and enable Music Creators i.e. songwriters, composers, or solo artists, bands, producers and performers of all backgrounds, to develop creatively and professionally.

Grants of up to £10,000 are awarded to composers cover activities such as:

  • Touring
  • Recording
  • Promotion and marketing
  • Commissions of new music by UK-based creators*
  • Exciting community projects involving high-quality music creators
  • Music creator residencies
  • Live programmes featuring new UK music

Successful proposals will fit all three of the following funding priorities:

  • To support the creation, performance and promotion of outstanding new music in any genre
  • To enable the UK’s most talented music creators to realise their potential
  • To inspire audiences

Priority is given to not for profit groups.

Funded projects must comply with the latest UK Government advice, lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures. Please be aware that we are still accepting applications which involved live performance or other elements which at time of writing are not allowed but will in the future go ahead.

Rowing Foundation Grants Programme

The Rowing Foundation works to promote the participation in rowing of young people (those under 18 or still in full time education) and the disabled of all ages.

The Foundation gives grants of £500-£3,000 to help organisations and clubs involved in on water elements of the sport of Rowing who are individually affiliated to British Rowing (other than via their governing body) and whose requirements may be too small or who may be otherwise ineligible for an approach to the National Lottery or other similar sources of funds. The Rowing Foundation prefers to encourage participation in rowing by the young or disabled through the provision of equipment, such as boats, sculls, ergos, oars and essential safety equipment.

The Foundation’s makes grants of between £500-£3000 up to 50% of the cost, usually to initiate projects when a club, school or other organisation can demonstrate their ability to complete the project. Grants are made to support rowing only.

Applications must be for projects or work that is for public benefit; non-elitist; for the benefit of young people; those in full time education; or those who are disabled.

The next closing date is the 26th October 2020.

Grants of up to £5,000 Available for Projects that Help the Homeless

Typically, such organisations may operate small or medium-sized residential or training facilities to assist homeless people.

The grants are available for capital costs and examples of previously supported projects include:

  • The Booth Centre, an advice and activity centre for homeless people in Manchester, where people undertake education and training courses as well as receiving advice and food, received a grant of £1,500 to transform the centre with new lighting, a new water heater and new decoration.
  • A grant of £3,000 to the Amber Foundation to enable the Foundation to buy new bedroom furniture for their residential centre in Devon, where every year over 60 unemployed, homeless young people are able to rebuild their lives and gain the motivation, confidence, self-esteem and skills for independent living.

The closing date for the next round of funding is the 15th September 2020.

TDS Charitable Foundation

The next application deadline for applications to the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) Charitable Foundation is 5pm on Friday 25th September 2020.

The TDS Charitable Foundation aims to improve private rented housing standards. Through its grants programme, the Foundation is looking to support bids that promote knowledge of inexperienced landlord’s obligations or tenant’s rights and responsibilities. Charitable organisations including housing associations and community interest companies (CIC’s) can apply for projects that will help to educate inexperienced landlords about the obligations of being a private landlord and which will help educate tenants about their rights and responsibilities.

The Foundation are particularly interested in receiving applications that seek to drive forward education and learning as well as dispute resolution, in light of the impact which Covid-19 has had on the Private Rented Sector.

The maximum grant available is £10,000 per project.

Previous projects supported include:

  • 4 the community – a project to extend and improve the information, education, and support available to Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMO) tenants in Rhyl.
  • Cardiff Tenants and Residents Federation – a tenant education programme that specifically informs tenants about the key differences about renting in Wales, as well as wider rights and responsibilities.

The Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust Reviews Grant Criteria in Response to the Coronavirus

In response to the Coronavirus, the Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust have reviewed their grant criteria to enable them to spread their funds as widely as possible to help those with greatest need. The Trust awards grants to UK registered charities or organisations that are exempt from registration with projects that address specific categories set out by the Trust each year.

The next round of funding will be aimed at supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable people aged 60 and over affected by the crisis. UK registered charities with an income and expenditure of £1,000,000 and over will be able to apply for grants of £1,000 to continue their much-needed support.

The next round of funding will be open for applications from the 1st of July 2020 through to the 31st July 2020.
