Festive cheer for Darwen’s Christmas makeover!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Darwen with a selection of brand new lights for 2020!

The Town hall has been dressed in beautiful waterfall lights, the Christmas tree is lit and standing proud in the square and there’s new decorations adorning the bandstand in School Street.

And that’s not all, as the market has been sprinkled with Christmas magic too with a new Christmas display in time for the return of the ever-popular pop up markets on December 5th.

Councillor Phil Riley, Executive Member for Regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said:

We know that some of our residents have been putting their Christmas decorations up early to help them get in to the Christmas spirit and we hope the lights in Darwen town centre will help spread some festive cheer too.

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year with so many having to sacrifice so much.

We’ve had to do things a little different this year as we couldn’t have the popular Christmas lights switch on, but I do hope residents young and old will visit the town and enjoy the new lights.

The council’s team of highly skilled and weather hardy electricians have been working long hours, late in to the night to put the finishing touches to the new lighting displays.

And, the selection of new festive decorations continue in to Darwen Market too where beautiful snowflake trees have been created using handcrafted snowflakes.

These have been lovingly made by children at Avondale Primary School and are on display for all to see.

There’s messages to read and a rainbow snowflake paying tribute to the borough’s NHS and keyworkers.

And, Crafty Vintage have put their skills to fantastic use too in making a magical festive walk through in the market.

In keeping with the council’s efforts to support local businesses, they sourced the 14 3ft Christmas trees for the display from local business Paul Haley Christmas Trees.

The dazzling exhibition complements the Christmas trees and the traditional crib which are also in place for shoppers to see at Darwen Market.

Councillor Riley added:

There’s lots of Christmas spirit in the market and our traders need our support now more than ever below.

Please, come and pay the market a visit, enjoy the new decorations and support local businesses this festive season.

The pop up markets are always really popular and the stalls, run by local businesses, will have beautiful Christmas gifts for you to buy.

The pop up markets are set to return from Saturday, December 5th with a special Christmas market for the launch.

And while Darwen Rotary won’t be able to invite Santa to their traditional grotto event this year, they’re instead offering Zoom calls with the big man himself!
