Blackburn with Darwen Council will pay tribute to key workers who have lost their lives to coronavirus by holding a minute’s silence today.
Staff and councillors will fall silent at 11am today to remember all those key workers who have died during the pandemic.
It is being held on International Workers Memorial Day, an annual event led by trade unions to remember those who have died at work, or from work-related injury and diseases.
Councillor Mohammed Khan, the Leader of the Council, said he hoped everyone in the borough would join in.
He said:
I hope everyone joins in at 11am to remember those key workers who have died because of the on going outbreak. Sadly, across the country, we have lost doctors, nurses, social care staff, transport workers and others, all just serving the public during this unprecedented crisis.
International Workers Memorial Day is an annual event which takes on an added significance this year because of the coronavirus. It’s right we as a borough pay tribute to those who have lost their lives.
Blackburn and District Trades Union Council marks International Workers Memorial Day every year with an event in Blackburn town centre. This year, because of stay at home rules, they will be holding it online.
