Council praise for Community Running Movement

A Council endorsed community movement which continues to grow and help improve the lives of many people is about to launch its next plan.

Blackburn 5K Group Run is an all-inclusive running programme in a unique community setting following the NHS-approved Couch to 5k plan to gradually work up to running or walking 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in just nine weeks. There is no cost to attend.

The next plan starts on Saturday 16th June 2018.  Sessions are held on Saturday morning at 9am and Monday & Thursday evening at 7pm. Sessions start at the car park on Tower Road (Witton Park), Blackburn.

Councillor Mohammed Khan, the leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council and chair of Blackburn with Darwen Health and Wellbeing Board, said:

The work that this group has done over the years is very impressive, we are lucky to have such dedicated people making it happen. We see so many people out on our streets running and the benefits to health and wellbeing are very clear. We are very happy to endorse and support this programme.

The multi-award winning programme is one of the largest in the UK with hundreds of people attending the sessions three times a week. It’s difficult to start any type of fitness programme alone and there’s a far greater chance of completing it if you have the support of others. You will have the opportunity to embark on your Couch to 5k journey in a friendly environment with the additional support of volunteer mentors who, most importantly, have all successfully completed the plan themselves.

The support doesn’t stop at the end of the 9 week plan. Everyone who completes the plan can become a volunteer, continue to run in a social environment or even move up to the 10k Progression Groups and beyond.
