Blackburn with Darwen Council is marking St George’s Day with a special message on its digital advertising screen.

Today (April 23) the country celebrates the patron saint of England. A message wishing everyone in the borough a happy Saint George’s Day will be displayed on the Council’s town hall screen, Larkhill screen and bus totems.

In a statement to mark the day, Councillor Mohammed Khan, Leader of the Council, said:

Traditionally, St George’s Day is a time where people come together to celebrate everything we love about our fabulous country. Sadly, the ongoing coronavirus crisis means we have to mark the day in our own homes.

Still, I believe it is important we do celebrate this day and everything we cherish about England. I want to use it as an opportunity to pay tribute to our key workers who are delivering essential services.

Perhaps this St George’s Day, we can all wear something red and white while we go out on our doorsteps and clap our country’s brave and dedicated key worker.

The borough’s Mayor Councillor Jim Shorrock said:

I know we are in really testing times but on behalf of the borough, I want to wish everyone in the borough a Happy Saint George’s Day.

If you are doing anything at home to mark the day, please send us a picture and we publish it on our social media channels. Send your pictures to prandcommunications@blackburn.gov.uk

The Clap for Key Workers will take place again at 8pm tonight.
