Blackburn with Darwen Council is marking National Voter Registration Day 2015, taking place on Thursday, February 5.

A member of the elections team will be available in the reception of the town hall during the course of the day.

The council’s social media channels will also be taking part in the day via Twitter and Facebook, encouraging people to register.

They will be able to explain how to make sure you are registered to vote, and can also tell you a bit more about Individual Electoral Registration, a major change to the way voters register to vote.

It moves away from household registration to individual registration, where a person wishing to register needs to provide their National Insurance Number and Date of Birth.

The best way to register is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Harry Catherall, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s returning officer, said:

The right to vote in elections is a fundamental part of living in an open and democratic society. If you are not on the register or your details are incorrect, you won’t be able to vote.  If you don’t vote, you don’t have a say in how things are run.
