Yesterday, Patrick Grant, creator of Blackburn-based Community Clothing and BBC Sewing Bee presenter wrote a bold blog post, calling for shoppers to ‘Think Blackburn*, not Black Friday.’

In a response from Blackburn with Darwen Council Leader, Cllr Phil Riley, he said:

The call to support local businesses resonates strongly, particularly in these challenging times.

The cost-of-living crisis has forced many to prioritise their spending, with many people carefully managing their budgets. Making considered purchases that support our local community can make all the difference.

It’s often local, independent businesses that offer real value – both in terms of quality and the lasting impact on the community.

Shopping locally not only helps sustain jobs and livelihoods but also reinvests money back into the local economy. Beyond just affordability, local shops, of which we have an abundance in Blackburn with Darwen often provide a more personal experience and unique, thoughtful products that align with mindful spending.

Cllr Riley said the message is a timely reminder that, when money is tight, every pound spent can be a powerful tool for supporting our neighbours and ensuring our high streets remain vibrant.

He added:

Blackburn and Darwen, along with our neighbouring northern towns, have a long and rich history of skilled craftsmanship and innovation, and Patrick’s words remind us of the enduring importance of supporting local businesses that create good jobs, reduce waste, and invest in our community.

Community Clothing’s goal is to support the UKs manufacturing industry and create jobs by making high-quality and long-lasting clothing. The brand uses ethically sourced materials and works with a cooperative of British factories and mills.

And their denim is made, right here in Blackburn.

The borough is home to a plethora of exceptional makers and manufacturers who embody quality and craftsmanship.

Cllr Riley added:

Buying local, visiting markets and supporting our independent shops, offers the chance to support hardworking people in borough and across the UK and is a powerful way to look out for one another.
