A Council physical activity instructor has been recognised for her dedication to helping others in the community.
Tember Walsh, a Physical Activity Instructor based at Blackburn’s Witton Park, has been awarded Connect Champion of the Month.
The Council’s Connect project was set up to promote sustainable transport such as walking, cycling, car sharing and using public transport more often.
The Champion of the Month award is a new feature on the Connect website (www.bwdconnect.org.uk) to recognise the efforts of staff and the community who go the extra mile to make the borough a better place.
Here’s Tembers’ story:
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Every day we help someone, we provide a service that not only helps with people’s physical fitness but in fact it improves their overall wellbeing too. It really is a rewarding job to know you help so many people from the smallest of things we think like ‘learning to ride’ or our ‘beginners walk’.
What’s been your best moment?
Hmmmm… This is tricky because I do have a few, from the first time of opening up the double doors of our brand new Witton Park Cycle Centre to our amazing new pump track watching people of all ages queuing to have a go, to having all our racks totally empty due to our very busy evening sessions.
What would you say to encourage other people to get involved in cycling?
Spring is showing, so why not get ready for our best summer yet by cycling, enjoy the great outdoors on your bike. Cycling is a great way to keep fit and adventure for all ages and abilities so why not give it a go, you never know, you might like it.
How does it feel to be awarded this accolade?
I feel really proud to have been given this award, it’s nice to know your hard work has been recognised, I love my job, for me it’s more than a job it’s a vocation. However, we work as part of a team here and this award is a wider recognition to the whole team and the work they do.
Is there anything new you want to promote?
We have so many new 2016 offers down at the Cycle Centre, which is constantly changing and having new courses added so this would probably be a long response from school outdoor packages, employer team building days to map reading courses, walking and cycling festival to our brand new balance ability/stride to rider sessions.
