Blackburn with Darwen Council is supporting a national campaign to honour the country’s ‘Highways Heroes.’
Essential work is continuing right across the borough to keep the roads and pathways safe – especially for key workers and emergency vehicles.
The teams are repairing around 250 pot holes a week and there’s also drainage works, to reduce the risk of flooding, network management, parking services and operational teams working to the Public Health England coronavirus guidelines.
Congratulating the hardworking team, Councillor Phil Riley, the council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said:
We have so many key workers right across the borough who are going above and beyond each day and we are proud of them all.
This new campaign is a great way to recognise those who are helping to keep the borough moving – keeping the roads and pathways safe for key workers, emergency vehicles, motorists and our residents.
They’ve all had to adapt to new ways of working, but the sense of pride at doing a good job for Blackburn with Darwen is just terrific.
They’re digging in and getting the job done and for that we’re all very grateful and want to show our upmost appreciation.
To reduce disruption once the covid-19 restrictions are lifted, work has also continued on the Blackburn Town Centre Improvement Scheme.
Councillor Riley added:
We’ve taken on board all of the safety guidelines we need to protect our staff and residents and are enforcing them rigorously.
It’s actually a really good time for us to be undertaking this work as it’s limiting the disruption for our residents once they can get back to work and in in to the town centre.
The multi-million pound scheme is progressing really well and the improvements will benefit the whole area.
Again, I’d like to thank all of our staff involved and the contractors who are working hard and to such high standards.
Other works being carried out include:
- Essential highway inspections and pothole repairs
- Gully emptying and jetting
- Street lighting repairs
- Resurfacing – extensive works to remove and replace old road surfaces.
- Other maintenance works, including patching, line painting or sign repairs.
The Highways Heroes campaign has been launched by ADEPT – the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport.
