Blackburn with Darwen Council is backing the Electoral Commission and National Union of Students’ joint campaign to get more students and young people registered to vote ahead of the local and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May.
Called #RegAFriend (‘Register a Friend’), the campaign urges students and young people who have already registered to vote to encourage their non-registered friends and family to now do the same, by sharing messages and photos on social media.
All they need to do is register online at gov.uk/register-to-vote and post a photo of themselves making the voter cross mark and nominating all their friends who need to register next. Not forgetting the #RegAFriend hashtag and a link to the registration page: gov.uk/register-to-vote.
The campaign starts this week and will run until the deadline for registration in April.
Denise Park, Deputy Returning Officer, said:
This is a great and fun way of encouraging young people to get registered. There is still time to register to vote in the upcoming elections. Elections are fundamental to our democratic way of life. If you are not registered, you can’t vote. If you don’t vote, you don’t have a say in how things are run.
