Blackburn with Darwen Council is backing the Lancashire School Sailing Association (LSSA) as the only Blackburn group in the running to win a share of Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures £1million pot supporting under 18s nationwide.

The LSSA offers local young people the chance to get involved in water based activities and operate from sailing bases in Lancashire, including Fishmoor Reservoir, Blackburn.

Persimmon Homes Northwest is backing the LSSA to be a prize winner at a gala dinner in October, where cash awards of £100,000, £50,000 or £20,000 will be made to those winning the most online votes.

Councillor Phil Riley, Executive Member for Growth and Development, said:

The Lancashire School Sailing Association provides a fantastic opportunity for many young people in the borough to try out water based activities. We should all be getting behind them to make sure they are in the best position to win one of the top cash awards.

John McCann representing Lancashire School Sailing Association said:

It is a huge achievement to have been selected as a regional finalist, but now we really need people to get behind us. We are planning to replace our old changing rooms and shipping containers at Fishmoor, Blackburn, with a new purpose-built boathouse, so a cash award would be a huge step towards this ambition.

Building Futures is being delivered through the Persimmon Charitable Foundation, which last year donated £620,000 to support children’s sport.
