In December 2021, Blackburn officially submitted its bid to become a city through the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We were overwhelmed by the incredible response, some of which you can read more about below.
We heard remarkable stories from residents and those connected with the town. Almost 100 quotes were gathered from Blackburn businesses, charities and celebrities.
Support was given from the likes of our football club, Blackburn Rovers to our world-leading wallpaper manufacturer Graham & Brown.
We would love to continue to hear from you and are keen to keep up the passion and the pace for pride in our place.
If you would like to submit a comment about why you are backing Blackburn’s bid for city status then please just send it through with a photo to our communications team. Likewise if you have any further ideas around what else we can do to continue talking our town up please get in touch.

Photos from our residents – #BackingBlackburnPhotography
As part of the City Bid application, we called out to our amazing residents asking for their photographs displaying key features of Blackburn and helping to create a strong library of place images for open use.
Incredibly, almost 600 images were shared using the #BackingBlackburnPhotography hashtag on social media. We think the response really shows the wealth of talent and civic pride we have in the town.
Please do feel free to download and use the images on your websites, social media channels or even for recruitment purposes – they can be used for any activity, which helps play a part in promoting our brilliant town.
All we ask is that you please remember to credit the original photographer detailed on the file. Thank you.

Blackburn, especially Blackburn’s business community has a long and proud tradition of punching above its weight.
As a home of the Industrial revolution and an area still steeped in manufacture and industry I cannot see a better way for the town to be honoured for it contribution to national society than being granted city status in 2022.
So on behalf of all Hive members, business leaders and entrepreneurs past, present and future, I fully endorse Blackburn’s City bid, and look forward to the City unlocking the full economic potential this opportunity will afford us.

One Voice campaign
Local charity One Voice collaborated with the Council to further bolster support for Blackburn to become a city.
One Voice Blackburn supported the #BackingBlackburn campaign in a bid to land city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations next year.
The charity aspires to create cohesive, aspirational and confident communities in Blackburn with Darwen.
One Voice asked their members and other residents to choose a famous landmark in the town and be photographed with the caption – Blackburn, we live it, we breathe it, we love it. We think this summarises the diversity and strengths of our communities perfectly.
