As International Women’s Day approaches, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council are encouraging all residents to strike the #ChooseToChallenge pose, showing commitment to building a more gender-equal world – with the chance to win a free afternoon tea from Dolly’s Tearoom!
Monday 8 March 2021 marks International Women’s Day, a global effort in celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge – asking you to raise your hand high and show your commitment to choose to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and collectively help forge an inclusive world.
On Monday, the Council’s social media will see a celebration of those within the Blackburn with Darwen community, past and present, who are choosing to challenge inequality.
This will include a reminder of the Barbara Castle statue campaign – a bid to erect a statue of the Baroness of Blackburn in Jubilee Square, who fought ferociously for equal pay, amongst many other social issues. Donate to the cause via the council website by scrolling down to ‘Donation to Barbara Castle Statue Fund’ box.
We encourage everyone to get involved with #ChooseToChallenge!
Take a picture of yourself striking the #ChooseToChallenge pose and share with a quote declaring your own commitment. See the example from Cllr Maureen Bateson included here!
You can also find more examples online, including suggested quotes.
Remember – this isn’t just for women! Active participation from all gender identities is encouraged.
