Students and teachers at Islamiyah School in Blackburn were joined by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for health and adult social care on a charity walk recently.

The students, along with Councillor Mustafa Desai, made the ascent up to Darwen Tower to raise awareness of water shortage issues around the world.

900 children around the world die every day due to a lack of access to clean water and so pupils were keen to donate the £700 raised to MADE – an organisation that inspires and develops young people.

The charity is currently working on a project to build a well in a village in Zanzibar which will provide water to 490 people.

Councillor Desai said:

I was delighted to join the pupils on the walk. One of the responsibilities in my role is to promote healthy living and, as walking is one of my passions, this provided the perfect opportunity to combine both together. Along the way the pupils took part in a photography assignment and met some interesting people including a chap whose daughter designed the Darwen Tower weathervane and a lady whose great grandfather, Richard Robinson, was a stonemason at the age of 13 and was responsible for engraving the stone commentating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. We had a lot of fun and raised money for a very worthy cause.
