Celebrate International Women’s Day

Published Monday 8 January 2018 at 16:43

Special tribute will be made to women past and present who have contributed to the success of Blackburn and Darwen as part of International Women’s Day in March.

Councillor Maureen Bateson is spearheading efforts to raise the profile of the event on Thursday, March 8 2018 which will also recognise the centenary of women’s right to vote in the UK.

You can play a part by thinking of how your business, service, group or organisation can mark the day,

explained Councillor Bateson.

This could be planning something new or simply re-focusing existing activity that is scheduled anytime around the date.

The theme this year is ‘Press for Progress’. Locally there will be a focus on the achievements of women in Blackburn and Darwen, including political activists. The year 2018 marks 100 years since women were granted the right to vote in elections for the first time in this country.

It’s really important we remember or past too and women’s suffrage was such a significant milestone.  Hopefully we can inspire other women in the community to make their mark, perhaps by getting involved with an important cause or to seek support to overcome any barriers they might face in achieving their potential in life,

added Councillor Bateson.

It’s a chance for organisations to promote their services as well as highlighting the positive contribution and role of women in the borough over the last century.

Organisations that have pledged to get involved so far include Blackburn with Darwen Council, The Blackburn BID, The Mall, Age Uk, The Wish Centre,  Blackburn Rovers,  Blackburn Youth Zone and  Lancashire Constabulary. Plans include recruitment drives, displays and drama performances, networking and social events.

A programme of events will be produced.

It’s hoped to continue the focus on women’s role in the borough as part of the Heritage Festival activities planned for later in the year.
