With less than a week to go until the Community Volunteer Awards, organisers Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Community CVS reveal the compere for the presentation evening.

BBC Radio Lancashire’s drivetime presenter Brett Davison is ‘gearing up’ to crown dozens of community heroes on the night of Monday 10 June.

Brett will host the prestigious ceremony in King George’s Hall at which 21 awards will be handed out to individuals and groups who give their time and talents for free to help make the borough a better place.

Brett Davison said:

I’m really looking forward to hosting the Community Volunteer Awards, it promises to be such a brilliant event. It’s lovely to be able to celebrate the fantastic people who do so much good for their community without any expectation of recognition or reward.

From over 300 nominations, 63 individuals and community groups have made the shortlist and been invited to the awards presentation on Monday 10 June.

Awards will be handed out across 13 categories including Culture, Leisure & Sport, Community Involvement, and Good Neighbour.

There’s a special Young People’s Award, an award for Volunteer of the Year, and one worthy winner will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Find out who’s nominated.

The Community Volunteer Awards are organised jointly by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Community CVS.

Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Councillor Mohammed Khan, said:

Blackburn with Darwen is blessed with so many good souls who give their time and energy to help other people and make the borough a better place to live. They get involved in their local communities, they provide essential support to others, and help to keep local facilities running – with no expectation of anything in return.

We do not take these volunteers and their valuable contributions to borough life for granted – and the Community Volunteer Awards is one way to give them some recognition and say thank you for what they do.

Garth Hodgkinson, Chief Executive of Community CVS, said:

Our Community Volunteer Awards event is always a highlight in our annual calendar, as we bring together volunteers from right across the borough. It’s a true celebration of all that they achieve through their volunteering, from the good neighbours who perhaps don’t see the help they give to others as volunteering, to the Blackburn with Darwen businesses that encourage their staff to give their time to a good cause.

Sponsors of the 2019 Community Volunteer Awards are: Euro Garages, Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, Herbert Parkinson, Blackburn College, East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, Blackburn with Darwen CCG, Blackburn Youth Zone, Age UK, Shelter, Personalising Freedom, McDonald’s, BBC Radio Lancashire, Together a Healthier Future, and Our Community, Our Future.

Representatives of each sponsor will be presenting awards at the ceremony on Monday 10 June, alongside the Deputy Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Councillor Iftakhar Hussain.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by a youth dance group from Blackburn Youth Zone, and local jazz band Blojangles.
