The Poppy Appeal has officially been launched in Blackburn town centre today.
The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, together with Council Leader Coun Phil Riley and Chief Executive Denise Park, accompanied members of the Blackburn branch of the Royal British Legion to open this year’s official Poppy Shop
Located in The Mall Blackburn, close to Sports Direct on King William Street, the Poppy Shop sells a variety of official Royal British Legion merchandise, as well as the instantly recognisable paper poppies.
The Mayor, Coun Suleman Khonat, commented:
“Like many others, I will wear my poppy with pride as a symbol of respect to the fallen heroes who gave their lives to protect their country, and the brave servicemen and women who continue to serve today.
“It will be my pleasure to represent the borough at various remembrance events over the next few weeks as Blackburn with Darwen pays its respects.”
Coun Phil Riley added:
“I’m really pleased that the Mall has been able to work with our local Royal British Legion to once again host the Poppy Shop. As well as being the place to buy official poppy merchandise to wear, the premises will also act as a base for local volunteers, giving town centre shoppers the chance to learn more about the charity’s work.”
Loraine Jones, General Manager at The Mall Blackburn, said:
“Anyone who donates to the Poppy Appeal helps the Royal British Legion to provide support to the armed forces community and their families.
“I’m pleased that we have been able to provide a unit in such a prominent position to support the Royal British Legion’s fundraising during the national period of remembrance.”
The Poppy Shop in The Mall Blackburn is now open every day until Sunday 13 November. As well as selling Royal British Legion poppy merchandise, the Poppy Shop will also accept cash and contactless donations.
The shop is also available as a drop-in facility for members of the armed forces and their family members – feel welcome to pop by for a brew, a friendly ear and guidance on support.
