Blackburn’s Inspiring – new name, same great event!

The 2023 Blackburn’s Inspiring event took place at King George’s Hall on the 20th of September.

The event may have a new name, but the focus remained the same.  Previously Blackburn is Hiring, the event is now in its sixth year and is made up of both education and training providers as well as local employers.

It aims to inform and inspire young people of the options available once they leave school. It also provides opportunity for some ‘hands on’ activities. Although the primary focus is on young people aged 14-16, there is also information for those attending sixth form, FE college and for those who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment and Training) in BwD.

This year the event hosted 65 exhibitors (including the University of Lancaster, Blackburn College, EG Group, BAE Systems, Lancashire Constabulary, Herbert Parkinson and Daniel Thwaites) and was attended by almost 2200 young people throughout the day.

Cllr Julie Gunn, Executive member for Children, Young People and Education, said:

I’ve really enjoyed attending the Blackburn’s Inspiring event this morning, it’s been wonderful to see all the young people engaging with the employers and further education providers here. Thank you for all those that attended and also to the organisations who have provided valuable insight as to the great opportunities that are available to our young people.

It is also an opportunity for local businesses to meet with their potential employees and to inform young people of the skills they look for.

The Council’s Leader, Councillor Phil Riley said:

Blackburn is inspiring is an important annual event that not only inspires our young people with what is available to them in the borough (and beyond), but showcases the brilliant businesses that are vital to our local economy.

The event aims to raise the aspirations of young people through conversation with providers and employers.

Emma Deeks, Senior Future U Outreach Officer who are sponsors the event said:

Blackburn’s Inspiring offers a great opportunity for local learners and at Future U we are proud to support the event. It was fantastic to see so many young people exploring opportunities for their future. It was particularly impressive observing how they engaged professionally with local employers, introducing themselves, asking questions and discovering more about potential careers and pathways.

Event organisers, New Directions, expanded the event over two floors this year to allow more space for exhibitors and for the increasing number of visitors. They are delighted to see more opportunity for young people to interact with employers and learning providers.
