Blackburn with Darwen marks VJ Day

Blackburn with Darwen is set to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory of Japan Day).

The day marks the anniversary of the surrender of Japanese forces on August 15, 1945.

It signalled the end of worldwide conflict after Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on May 8, 1945 in which many brave men and women fought to bring an end to the war once and for all.

Under normal circumstances VJ Day is celebrated similarly to VE Day with commemorations for those who fought during the war.

However, this year the Council will be celebrating remotely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Councillor Iftahkar Hussain, said:

VJ Day is a time for us all to reflect on the efforts of the men and women who fought to end the war.

This day means a lot to me as my grandfather, who served in the British army, was one of the lucky ones that survived.

Let us all show our support to those that lost loved ones in the second World War.

The Mayor has prepared a short speech to honour all those who played their part.
