Blackburn with Darwen Library and Information Service is joining a national  scheme to support young people with mental health challenges.

Reading Well for young people is a national scheme and part of the hugely successful Reading Well Books on Prescription programme.

It will provide 13-18 year-olds with high-quality information, support and advice on a wide-range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bullying and exams.

Chosen by experts the thirty five titles can be borrowed from all local libraries, but may also be recommended by GPs or other health practitioners.

This is the third phase of a self-help scheme which has been rolled out across England’s library authorities since 2013.  Local libraries also stock expert-selected titles on adult mental health and dementia.

The scheme is endorsed by The Society of Chief Librarians, The Association of Children’s and Education Librarians, The Reading Agency, Arts Council England and the Wellcome Trust.

Martin Eden, Director of Environment and Leisure at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “Our libraries can play a really important role in getting information out there to the community.

“These titles will hopefully help to  tackle any misinformation and help young people know they are not alone in dealing with these issues.”
