As part of activities around the day, the Council is highlighting a number of social groups, free activities and trips for older people that live in the borough.

Connecting East Lancashire, part of the Council’s transport team’s sustainable transport project, have been organising activities as part of their ‘Introduction to Bus Travel’ initiative. Connect work closely with Adult Learning in Prevention, Neighbourhoods and Learning Services department.

The campaign offers a variety of activities to improve health and wellbeing, tackling isolation and broadening travel horizons which may encourage those involved to take up a wider range of volunteering and community opportunities or employment.

One recent trip saw a group of older people take a ‘reminiscence visit’ to Turton Tower. The group, a mixture of people that live with learning disabilities, dementia, and visual impairment, enjoyed a guided tour around the historic 16th century grade I listed building.

The next upcoming event is at Mad Hatter’s Tea Shop, opposite Blackburn Library, on 31 October from 2-4pm. There will be plenty of activities and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to all those who are in fancy dress for Halloween. All welcome, tickets are £4.50 payable on the day.

There will be a Christmas Festive Party at Oswaldtwistle Mills on November 27. The trip, which costs £24 per ticket, includes a 3 course Christmas meal, entertainment, and time for shopping.

On December 3, the annual trip to Manchester’s famous Christmas Markets will take place. Leaving at 9.40am with return to Blackburn at 4.45pm.

All trips begin at Blackburn bus station, include a tour of the bus station and transport costs are funded by Connecting East Lancashire.
