BBC Archive recently published a film of Blackburn made in 1957 on a social media platform.
The film, published a few weeks ago, is described as footage from Wakes Week (then the annual holiday for Lancashire cotton towns) in Blackburn 1957. It’s a film by future Oscar-winning director, John Schlesinger. It’s a stunning step back in time.
Do you recognise anyone in the film shared on the BBC Archive Facebook page?

Blackburn Library has lots of newspaper cuttings that feature the Wakes Week holidays in the local press of the day.
All the newspapers (which the library holds on microfilm) would carry details of each town’s Wakes Weeks. Details of the dates would be published in April/May of each year. Darwen week/s were always before Blackburn.
