Last week Blackburn Market in the heart of the town centre welcomed two new stalls to the food court.
It’s thought that the market has been a part of Blackburn since 567 A.D. In the 1960’s it opened in Penny Street before relocating to its new home under the Mall in 2011. It hosts several local food businesses selling everything from fresh food such as bread, vegetables and fish, to hearty meals you can eat in or takeaway such as filled jacket potatoes, noodles and kebabs. Adding to the variety of food available will be Shinsen Sushi Experience and The Little Italian.
Shinsen Sushi Experience is run by Dimitrios Kalliontzis, a sushi chef with six years’ experience of practicing the art of sushi. As well as offering exclusive sushi rolls, you can create your own poke bowl or indulge in muffin style baked sushi. All items are fresh daily and made with Halal-certified ingredients. Dimitrios even leans on his new market neighbours for ingredients – Scott Stewart supplies all the fruit and veg and Mayers fishmongers supply the fish!
If Italian’s more your thing, you can get what they claim to be ‘the best pizza in town’ from The Little Italian, run by Kashif Khalid. As well as freshly cooked pizza, you can get some authentic pasta too. And if you’ve only got time for a quick takeaway they do filled wraps and even fried chicken! Also Halal friendly, they offer student deals too.
Councillor Jim Smith, Executive Member for Environment and Operations said:
It’s fantastic to see Blackburn market thriving with the addition of two new food stalls. It continues to be a favourite lunchtime destination for town centre workers, shoppers, and students alike. I wish both businesses all the very best in their new home.
If food is not what you’re after, there are also many other stalls for you to browse; selling anything and everything from flowers to footwear. Plus, when the children are off school you can take them to do free family friendly activities in the market. To find out when and for more information about the market, you can follow its social media pages – Facebook – Blackburn Market or Instagram – Blackburn Market
