Blackburn Hawks’ home game at the start of the year, turned out to be a memorable night both on and off the ice. The team’s NIHL1 fixture against the Deeside Dragons was not only a crucial league match but also a special event in partnership with Let’s Foster.
The Hawks, currently battling for top spot in the league, delivered an exciting 10-2 victory over the Deeside Dragons. Former Dragons player Petr Valusiak starred in the game, scoring twice in his second debut for the team. However, the thrilling on-ice action was only part of the story.
The event was held as part of the ongoing campaign to raise awareness about fostering in Blackburn with Darwen. With the Let’s Foster logo prominently featured on the team’s specially designed jerseys, the night aimed to both support and promote the fostering cause in the local community.
Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People, and Education, Cllr. Julie Gunn, attended the event and reflected on its significance:
“The relationship between the Hawks and Let’s Foster gives us an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of fostering. We are proud of our fantastic foster carers in the borough, and we’re always looking for more families who can offer a loving home to children and young people. The night was a celebration of that, and it was wonderful to see the children having such a great time at the match.”
Mike Dixon, who leads community outreach for Let’s Foster said:
“The night was a fantastic success,”
“It was great to see the kids so excited, especially those attending their first ice hockey game. Their reactions when the team hit the ice were priceless.”
In addition to the game, fans were encouraged to participate in a Teddy Bear Toss during the first intermission, with over 350 teddies collected and donated to Secret Santa, a local children’s charity. Fans also had the chance to win one of the exclusive match-worn jerseys in a raffle, with proceeds going towards supporting Let’s Foster’s vital work in the community.
The event also highlighted the success of the new Mockingbird constellation, a programme that helps foster families build strong relationships and provides much-needed support to children and carers alike. For many of the foster families in attendance, it was a chance to enjoy the game and make lasting memories together.
Looking ahead, the next big event for the team is a special themed night in March to celebrate the club’s 35th anniversary, with the Hawks donning retro jerseys from their past.
As the season progresses, the Hawks remain committed to giving back to the local community and supporting causes like fostering that make a real difference in the lives of children and young people in Blackburn with Darwen.
