Blackburn author Christina Gabbitas is adapting her popular book – Believe in Magic – into a play.
The award-winning author is collaborating with Westholme School to transform her story into theatre.
The production is set to take place at King George’s Hall in November and Christina is really excited for the boroughs children to see it from page to stage! She said:
“As a child growing up in Blackburn who struggled with reading and lacked confidence, this is a pinch me moment. If it wasn’t for my frequent visits to Blackburn Library, I wouldn’t be a writer today. To see my story come to life on stage at King George’s Hall, a place I loved to visit as a child, is an incredible honour. I am immensely grateful the dedicated drama team at Westholme for their enthusiasm about this project.”
The story about Blackburn was initially commissioned by Blackburn BID and received some great reviews. As well as praise from actress Jenny Agutter OBE, known for her role in Call the Midwife. She compared Christina’s Believe in Magic to the works of Lewis Carroll and E. Nesbit, with elements reminiscent of Narnia.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Phil Riley, said:
“Christina is a great ambassador for our town, her work with the Children’s Literature Festival and our libraries is really appreciated. Her aim of getting all our children interested in reading and books is admirable as well as teaching them about Blackburn and its history. The play will be a treat for visual learners as well as getting children involved with theatre.”
Cath Roberts, Director of Drama at Westholme School, said:
“We are incredibly proud to bring this story to life and celebrate Blackburn through our students’ creativity. Rehearsals will occur every Friday evening in our own Croston Theatre, offering a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved. We are excited to dive into this production that reflects our local history.”
Paul Taylor, Principal of Westholme School, said:
“This project exemplifies how we encourage our students to engage with the world outside the classroom, enhancing their civic awareness and sense of identity. We take pride in our Westholme students bringing to life the story of our town through what promises to be an exciting and meaningful production.”
The story follows Heidi, a caring foster mum, who takes her ten-year-old children, Peggy and Imtiaz, on an adventure to Blackburn Museum. This leads them on a time-traveling escapade back to the vibrant town centre of the 1800s. As they visit historic landmarks like King George’s Hall, the Fire Station Tower, Blackburn College, Blakey Moor, Blackburn Cathedral, the Market, and The Mall, they realise their adventure is more than just a getaway – it’s a quest to weave magic into the future.
The story draws inspiration from the legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Edward Hart, whose love for literature, community, and coin collecting continues to inspire.
Christina continued:
“I enjoyed writing this story and highlighting our town’s rich history—Blackburn has so much to celebrate, and this is just the beginning. We have countless hidden treasures in our community. I’m also writing a sequel!”
