Blackburn and Darwen Heritage Open Days 2016

Discover the stories behind many of Blackburn and Darwen’s landmarks at this year’s Heritage Open Days.

From Thursday, September 8 until Sunday, September 11, historic buildings across the borough will be throwing open their doors to welcome visitors.

It is a chance to see architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities that bring local history and culture to life.

This year more than 25 buildings across Blackburn and Darwen are offering a unique opportunity to see inside and discover more about the borough’s history and people.

Choose from a variety of free events including a tour of Darwen Town Council Chamber and the old Magistrates court on Thursday or heritage tours all weekend at Eanam Wharf that this year celebrates its bicentenary.

Visit Darwen Vale High School on Saturday from 9am-1pm to see old photographs and archives dating back to the 1939.

Or visit Hobkirk’s Sewing Machines on Darwen Street, Blackburn from Thursday to Saturday, for a tour and talk about the Sewing Machine Museum.

And on Saturday at Blackburn’s Cathedral Square there will be display of ex East Lancashire Municipal transport buses with free rides on Heritage routes around the borough
