Blackburn Rovers Football Club have announced their support for the town to be crowned a city.
Blackburn Rovers Manager Tony Mowbray said:
“Football and other sports in the town attracts many out-of-town visitors to visit the many large and independent retailers and eating places throughout the borough. We have fans watching and listening all over the world – truly helping to put Blackburn on the world-wide stage.
“One of the club’s proudest moments was to welcome the Queen and her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, to the Club in 2014 which has since hosted some of the biggest occasions in sports, music and entertainment.
“Everyone at Blackburn Rovers Football Club fully supports the civic bid for city status.”
Rovers forward Bradley Dack added:
“Blackburn’s people are amongst some of the friendliest in the world. 2022 could be the year to showcase to the wider UK what Blackburn has to offer. I’m fully supportive of this bid, so let’s all get behind Blackburn being the UK’s newest city of 2022.”
