POLICE are appealing for witnesses after play equipment at Witton Country Park was set on fire causing around £2,000 worth of damage.

The rope on the popular wooden play area was set alight, causing significant damage to the equipment, which now needs replacing.

Police appealed to parents to know where their children are. Officers made inquiries in the area at the time and a group of youths were reported to have been seen in the area.

The incident happened around 2.30pm on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

Cllr Jim Smith, Executive Member for Environment, with responsibility for the borough’s parks, said:

This mindless damage has spoilt the enjoyment of residents and families, particularly young children in the local community who enjoy using our parks and play areas.

Times are hard enough at the moment for everyone without having to deal with pathetic incidents like this which have both financial and time implications for the Fire, Police and the Council.

Cllr Smith added:

Thankfully the majority of our young people do not do things like this so we are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time to think back to see if they remember having seen anything at the time or anyone acting suspiciously.

Any small piece of information you may have could make a difference.

Police have asked for anyone with information or mobile phone footage to contact them on 101 quoting crime reference log number: 0387
